The valley · Selamat datang
Sidemen is a farming valley in Karangasem, East Bali, a long way from the beach clubs. The terraces step down to the river, the mornings start in mist, and on clear days Mount Agung fills the view.
We are one family running ten houses here: rice barns, teak joglos and family homes, built from thatch, timber and volcanic stone. You book with us directly, at the price you see.

A day at Lumbung
The Balinese day has names for its parts. Ours goes roughly like this.

Morning
Mist sits in the valley until the sun clears the ridge. Coffee on the bale, a fresh offering at your door, Agung if the sky is kind.

Midday
Walk the terrace paths with a map from reception, swim, then a long lunch at the warung down the road. Check-in for new guests from 15:00.

Late afternoon
The light turns gold across the paddy. Farmers walk home along the dykes and the herons come in to roost.

Night
Oil lamps on the paths, frogs in the fields, a sky with very little light in it. Quiet hours start at 22:00, and someone is on call all night.

Malam, when the rain comes
Quiet hours after 22:00

We booked two nights in Lumbung Padi and stayed six. The host’s mother taught us to make canang sari on the first morning.
The joglo is even more beautiful than the photos, and the photos are very good.
Three generations, one house, no arguments. Griya Kopi is a proper family home.
Clear prices, no surprises, and the most honest breakfast in Bali.
We woke at six for Agung and it was worth every minute.
